Meet Jill Macleod our SSA featured artist, just in time for her first solo show. Don’t miss ‘Extending The Line’ at the Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh, from 6th – 14th June!

Tell us what got you into art – how you got started – what first excited you.
I have always loved art, but I only started painting seriously after buying a set of oil paints in a little gallery in Tighnabruaich, about fifteen years ago. Several years of art classes and a degree from eca later, art is now my main career – and I love it!

Where do you make your work?
I worked from home after graduating but I currently am lucky to have a studio at WASPS Patriothall Gallery in Edinburgh. It is just a short term lease but I am really hoping it will continue for longer – I have so much more I would like to do and the thought of not having a studio now, is unbearable!

What are your main influences and sources of inspiration?
Much of my work is influenced by landscape and water and particularly harbours as I grew up in a small fishing village. But I love the outdoors in general and finding new places is always a source of inspiration because I find myself always questioning how I could portray what I see in a painting.

Is there some piece of advice / information / knowledge that you’d like to share?
Never give up.

Tell us about a project you are working on at present?
At the moment all my work is focused on my first solo exhibition, ‘Extending The Line’ which will be held at Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh from 6th – 14th June (Preview 5th June). This is a new body of work and although I still have all the same influences, the new images are going in a slightly different direction.
