SSA Essay Project | Lada Wilson
This month’s essay has been kindly provided by our invited guest contributor, Lada Wilson. Wilson is an artist, curator and educator originally hailing from Croatia who is now based in Scotland. She gained her MFA in Art, Society and Publics from DJCAD IN 2014, where she now lectures the MFA in Curatorial Practice.
Her artworks, which take many forms reference “contemporary interactions between humans, nature and the world at large”. The reconfiguration of space, often working outside of the white cube, is as much a part of the work as the work itself. For example, Wilson is the founder and curator of the 201 Telephone Box Gallery; a contemporary art gallery situated in a disused telephone box in Fife. Her practice often involves a high degree of collaboration as well as travel to deliver interesting contemporary projects in contextually appropriate locations.
Her written piece below originally took the form of a performative reading and installation which included text, a lectern, a custom-made costume for the piece and a 5kg bag of soil collected from locations connected to the places she feels she belongs and relating to her path migrating from her native Croatia to the Netherlands, Scotland and Spain.
