Annual Exhibition


Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland  present the biggest show of contemporary art in Scotland.

Working together for the first time, the two leading arts organisations are joining forces to present an ambitious one-off collaborative jointly selected and curated exhibition celebrating the best in contemporary and applied art.


Collection of unsold work is 11am – 4pm on Saturday 10 March 2018. All works must be removed from the galleries at this time unless alternative arrangements have already been agreed. If your work is sold we will notify you. Please remember to bring wrapping with you!

All Submissions
•    All entries must be submitted using the online portal by the stated deadlines. Only works that have been pre-selected via the online submission process will be accepted on the hand in day.
•    Professional Members of VAS or SSA may submit up to four works in total, including large scale or installation works.
•    Ordinary members, Student/Associate Members and non-members of VAS or SSA may submit up to three works in total, including large scale and installation works.
•    Non-members will be charged £15 per submission and can submit up to 3 works.
•    There is no entry charge for members of VAS or the SSA. Anyone wishing to join either society or renew their membership must do so by Monday 30 October 2017. After this date only open entries can be accepted.
•    There are no restrictions on size, discipline or media.
•    Artists can submit a group of works as one entry if the group was created with the intention of being viewed as a whole, eg in the case of a diptych or a large installation comprised of small elements.
•    Jewellers may submit a set of corresponding jewellery as one entry.
Artwork images and details.
General Submission – Up to 3 images of each work. If possible/appropriate please include an image of your work in context to give an idea of scale.
Installation and New Media Submissions – Up to 6 images for installation, site specific, new media, audio, audiovisual work, interactive works, performance, film, animation or proposals for an unrealised work. These might include sketches of the proposed work or images of past works and links to video or documentation.
All Submissions:
•    Photos should be JPEGs with a maximum file size of 1MB, at least 72 dpi, and at least 1000px along the longest edge.
•    Save your image files with your name and the title of your artwork as the file name, eg, JoeBloggs_Untitled1.jpg.
•    Do check that all images are sharp and as true as possible to your artwork. For further guidance on photography and images see our guidance notes.
•    Please ensure all artwork details are correct – titles, prices etc. submitted at this stage will be used for labels, exhibition catalogue and online.
Restrictions
•    No work will be exhibited that has also been shown or will be shown in the RSA open exhibition or New Contemporaries, or that has previously been shown in any SSA, VAS, RSW annual exhibition.
•    No reproductions or copies of any kind will be accepted. Giclee prints will only be accepted for photographic entries.
•    Artists do not need to be Scottish or have a Scottish connection to exhibit. Please note however that all pre-selected works need to be delivered to and collected from the gallery by the artist or a nominated representative, we cannot accept submissions or return works by post.Selection
•    Selection results will be available on the online submission site by the dates stated above.
•    Selection of certain works may be made with conditions and curatorial suggestions by the Council.
•    The judging panel’s decision is final and there is no appeals process.
•    We regret that we cannot offer feedback on the results of the selection.Pre-selected works
•    Works that pass the online pre-selection process must be delivered to the gallery on Sunday 21 January 2018
•    All works that are pre-selected online are still subject to final selection by the panel on delivery to the gallery.
•    Work selected for the exhibition will be subject to an administration fee of £5 per work for VAS and SSA members, and £15 per work for non-members.
•    Works that are not included in the final selection should be uplifted from the gallery on Wed 24 January 2018. The Societies have no storage space so works not hung must be collected on this date. Any work not uplifted becomes the property of VAS and may be disposed of or recycled.
Collaborations
•    Where two artists are collaborating on a single work the submission will count as one of the permitted entries from each of the artists. Artists submitting collaborative work can use the rest of their permitted entries to submit solo works.
Delivery of your work
•    The gallery is not manned by Society staff out with the advertised times and access cannot be arranged.
•    All packaging materials must be removed from the gallery.
•    There is no car park at the gallery. Where possible please arrive on foot or by public transport. Vehicular access will only be allowed for the delivery of large scale or heavy works.
•    Download the printable label, stick it to a piece of card or stiff paper, and attach it with string to the back of your work so that it can hang freely over the front of your work.
•    Please also attach a permanent label to your work with name, title, price and a contact phone number.
•    Jewellers should provide a separate delivery note with thumbnail images, materials and prices for the sales staff. Jewellers must provide appropriate packaging for wrapping sold works at the time of submission.

Framing/Finishing
•    No metal frames or works with wet paint will be accepted. The artist is liable for the cost of any damage caused to other works by such items.
•    All works being handed in must be free of all hooks and cords and clearly marked ‘this way up’ where appropriate.  The artist is liable for the cost of any damage caused to other works by protruding hooks and fixings.
•    Mirror plates for hanging are provided by the Societies.
Insurance
•    Whilst every possible care will be taken of works submitted, the Societies cannot be responsible for any loss or damage incurred during the exhibition or in transit to and from it.  The society does not insure the exhibits, artists are advised to insure their own work.
Sales and Commission
•    Professional members of VAS and the SSA will be charged a reduced commission rate of 35% on the sale price of all work sold in the exhibition.
•    Ordinary, student/associate and non-members will be charged a commission of 40% on the sale price of all work sold in the exhibition.
•    Any private sale must be intimated to the sales agent of VAS/SSA, and will be subject to the same level of commission. A sale made through the Societies shall have precedence. Plinths and Display Equipment
•    Artists must provide their own floor standing plinths or display equipment at the time of submission.
•    All display equipment must arrive in good condition and ready for use as no painting is permitted within the gallery.
•    Any specialist display and hanging mechanisms must be clearly outlined in the submission proposal and any extra costs incurred should be bourne by the artist.
•    Selected artists must supply their own electronic equipment if needed at the point of submission.
•    All electronic equipment must be PAT tested prior to handing in.
•    All equipment must be labelled with artist’s name and contact number.
Removal of Works
•    Works cannot be removed until the end of the exhibition.
•    The gallery is not manned by Societies’ staff out with the advised return date and times and access to collect works cannot be arranged.
•    VAS/SSA reserves the right to sell any works not collected after a six week period. Any costs incurred in storing uncollected work will be passed on to the artist.
•    Artists are responsible for arranging the collection of their own work if delivered by carrier.
Photography
•    It will be assumed that photographic reproduction by order of the Council of all works submitted is allowed by the artist unless otherwise indicated.
