EICHSTÄTT LITHOGRAPHY RESIDENCY 2024
The Society of Scottish Artists is delighted to be working once again in partnership with Li Portenlänger, Director of Lithographie-Werkstatt Eichstätt in Bavaria, Germany to offer a bi-annual Lithography Residency Prize in 2024 which includes a period of time working in the studio and a solo exhibition with opening reception.
The residency includes visits to local sites of cultural and historical interest, including the lithographic limestone quarry Solnhofen providing a paleontological background to this historic medium. The residency is 2 weeks in Autumn 2024, the exact dates will be agreed to suit both the artist and studio.
Also, a visit to The University Library of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt to view pieces from the studio’s ‘Lithography Collection’, which is expanding every year and includes lithographs from various artist residencies in Eichstatt.
Lithographie-Werkstatt Eichstätt is a small, well-equipped studio specialising in stone lithography and focusing on promoting this unique printmaking method in Eichstatt and internationally.

Award winners are required to cover their own transport costs to and from Germany.
This award is for a self-motivated artist who has prior experience of working in stone lithography. The applicant must include a referee to verify technical skills. The artist will gain experience of the unique way Li works with stone lithography at the studio. The aim of the residency is to offer an opportunity to add to and expand on their existing knowledge and experience of working in this medium.
Li Portenlänger, Studio Director is a practising artist and lithographer herself who regularly visits Scotland and has worked at Edinburgh Printmakers as a visiting artist.
Daily allowance and accommodation in St Walburg Guest House are provided by the Lithographie-Werkstatt Eichstätt along with all studio fees.
Award winners will be required to cover their own transport costs to and from Germany.
The award will also include an invitation to exhibit a piece of work created during their Residency at a subsequent SSA Annual Exhibition that follows.
2022 Resident Jill Bennett:
The SSA residency award provides an opportunity for a stone lithographer to experience working in a small print studio in Eichstatt, Bavaria, run by expert stone lithographer Li Portenlanger. Working in the studio with Li was a great pleasure as she has vast knowledge and experience. Finding new ways to look at your practice and technical skills is an invaluable part of a studio residency. My aim was to produce work based on the locality, e.g. “Old Watch Tower, Eichstatt”, but I also used images from Scotland, as in “Standing Stones, Kilmartin Glen”.
Eligibility
All artists working in lithography anywhere in the world are welcome to apply, although artists do have to be a member of the Society of Scottish Artists to apply.
Membership of the Society is open to all artists and you can join online today. There is no additional submission fee to apply for the residency.

HOW TO APPLY:
Prepare ONE PDF document containing the following:
- Your name and contact details
- Link to your website or equivalent
- 10 images of recent work with at least 5 being in stone lithography. Label each work with TITLE, MEDIUM, DIMENSIONS.
- 500 words on your interest in, skills and experience of working in stone lithography and its’ relevance to your practice.
- 500 words on why you are interested in this opportunity,
what you will bring to the residency and how it will benefit your practice. - C.V No more than one A4 page
- Name and email address of one referee who can verify your technical skills in stone Lithography.
