Statement

Statement

I’m an artist and writer based on the West Coast of Scotland.

As a visual artist, I work mostly in mixed media, aiming for the tipping point between drawing and painting, abstraction and realism. Much of my work is looking at how we perceive, interpret and communicate with the world – the boundaries and connections between the Self and the Other.

I explore this through:

Matter and materiality – embodiment, perception. Often using found materials and incorporating accident and involuntary elements in my work – how the world responds to matter.

The power of images – and how art objects can become almost talismanic. I find the process of making work transformative, and include elements of myth, magic and imagination to explore how humans create reality within themselves.

Recurring concerns include perception and phenomenology; the body; the sea; the self; womanhood; safety & mortality; memory; space, and creating space in the picture plane where dialogues between observation and imagination can happen. Recently I’ve become fascinated by composition and proprioception.

As a writer, I work mostly as a poet. My poetry often investigates historical texts and stories, looking into the ways language changes and evolves. I’m interested in the human condition and place, location, myth, nomenclature, and the voices of women through history in particular.
