Statement
Statement | I am an artist working primarily in ceramics, although I am increasingly experimenting with other materials in the search for sustainable and environmentally responsible options. A ceramics graduate of Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, I ran my own tile design studio in Edinburgh for 15 years. For the last 15 years I have been using my problem solving skills to draw attention to issues I feel strongly about. I create sculptures and installations that explore the theme of memory, and its role in making the connections we have to one another and our environment. My Beloved Cherry Tree is a collection of work celebrating the life of a beautiful tree that came down in storm Arwen, drawing attention to the climate crisis and global warming. Inside Outside explores the theme of inclusion and the issue of racial inequality. I enjoy collaboration and often work with makers and artists from other disciplines to push my knowledge and understanding. Working with textile artists I have been exploring the use of environmental sound recordings to inspire pattern making and most recently I have been working with a Nova Scotian jeweller exploring the theme of identity and the connections between our countries. |
Biography
Biography | I am a ceramics graduate of Grays School of Art, Aberdeen, and have been running my own business for 30 years, combining my ceramics practice with my work as a freelance business adviser, trainer and project manager. I have a strong interest in social enterprises, and a focus on organisations and projects with a social purpose and community benefit. While I have worked across all creative sectors I have a particular passion for craft and champions its role in economic development, sustainability, expressing identity, health and well being. In my creative work I am particularly interested in exploring new sustainable materials and adopting a closed loop approach to my making to minimise waste. I work on a freelance basis for Applied Arts Scotland, a charity run by makers to support other makers through peer exchange, sharing skills and expertise. Recent projects include the digital delivery of an accredited professional development award for craft practitioners – Sustaining Craft Business Practice, in collaboration with University of Highlands and Islands, The Resilience Programme, a mentoring programme for makers in partnership with Craft Scotland and http://www.crafttoolkit.com, a digital business development toolkit commissioned by the British Council. I am the craft representative on the Scottish Government Creative Industry Leadership Group. |
