Statement | I am a multi-disciplinary artist working mostly with installation to present ceramic, textile and mixed media objects. My work focuses on the female experience. Telling stories from my life and creating memorial for the women who have shaped my experiences. My aim with my work is to create a space for reflection, empathy and appreciation for women’s heritage.
I am currently based in Aberdeen having grown up in Caithness. I have a strong interest in the history of the Far North of Scotland with focus on the height of the herring fishing industry and the knitting traditions which grew from it. The knitwear which was developed at that time recorded women’s history in ways which no other material could have. At a time when women’s history especially in such rural areas was not often recorded. I believe fibres hold in them the experiences and environment of the maker. I aim to pay tribute to these women and continue their work by recording my own experiences through knitting.
Care and women’s labour are also strong themes throughout my work. My sculptures hold in them memories of the processes which made them; recording the repetition and labour which went into creating them. |
