My practice revolves around painting, drawing and mark making to create abstract images. I use mainly acrylic paint with charcoal and pastel on canvas or board. Recent paintings have begun to introduce text as an element, sometimes of poems referring to environmental and cultural themes; lines remembered from school days (poems like ‘Ozymandias’ by Shelley, Wordsworth’s ‘The World is Too Much with Us’) and then others by more modern poets together with random found text. Although the attraction for me is initially the effect of the words themselves followed by the exploration of their use as a means of disrupting the painted surface, the text is often destroyed – over-written, broken and distorted by the painting process – but to a degree the subject matter informs the initial construction of the image, preserving an echo of its original presence and sometimes a suggestion of its meaning. Not always though; the painting frequently evolves in a completely different way and becomes a reflection on the everyday abuse and erosion of language, the fragility of social systems and of actual material stuff and how meaning is constantly changed and renewed. All this while solving the daily problem of covering a canvas with paint. Ray Rankine 2021 |
