Statement

“When Andre Breton described his surrealist world as ‘beyond space and time’ he introduced a liberating concept. Recently I have worked to bring into my art new thoughts and feelings seeking after a personal freedom in the aesthetic experience. I want to create artworks that liberate the personality, yet balance the subconscious delights of chance possible in spontaneity and a consciously considered formal arrangement of colours and shapes. My art is concerned with revealing an alternative way to imagine the human condition, and to express the experience of those ideas and thoughts in an exciting aesthetic manner. I hope my paintings open up to viewers an alternative way of sensing life beyond the limits of nature where space and form create a universe of ideas and suggestions that stimulate the imagination. This aesthetic in my painting is further informed by vibrating colour relationships and formal balancing. The tension between colours and shapes offers to the viewer both an immediate spontaneous response and considered intellectual reflection.”Rowena’swork is represented in several National Collections.

Biography

Rowena Comrie has worked as a professional artist for over 30 years; in January 2010 she relocated from Aberdeen to Glasgow where she now works from a WASPS studio in the Gallowgate. She was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and in 1982 completed her BA(Hons) in Fine Art at Reading University where she embraced expressionist colourfield painting with confidence and passion.In her past role as the President of the Scottish Artists Union, along with the SAU Executive, she worked towards improving working conditions for Visual & Applied Artists in Scotland. In 2011 she was shortlisted for the prestigious Aspect Prize, resulting in an exhibition at the Fleming Collection Galleries in London.In 2012 Rowena was awarded Professional Development funding from Creative Scotland which enabled her to accept a residency opportunity in Indiana USA, commencing April 2013. A major solo exhibition took place in March 2015 at The Women’s Art Collection, Cambridge University, https://womensart.murrayedwards.cam.ac.uk/. She continues to exhibit regularly throughout the UK, and currently is a Satellite Associate of the Society of Scottish Artists as well as being a Professional Member.
