Performance | Ahed Alameri ‘We Love the Country’

As part of the SSA 126th Annual Exhibition, we are pleased to present a series of live performances by New Graduate Award Winner, Ahed Alameri.

The performance starts in a corner of the gallery space, with the artist repeatedly writing ‘we love the country’ in black chalk on the white wall. The artist then sits with a member of the audience; both have microphones. The artist questions the audience member, ‘do you love the country?’ before moving on to the wider group with the same question. The conversation will be recorded and played back at intervals when the artist is no longer there, for the remainder of the exhibition.

In this time of conflict and rising nationalism and drawing inspiration from Arab culture, the performance raises uncomfortable questions about belonging and affiliation, crossing between ambiguity and directness. The performance provides a space for collective dialogue and reflection. The experience is thought provoking and powerful.

Please note the performance will include audience participation and be recorded as part of the artwork presentation in the gallery.
